Behind him, he heard a door open. He concentrated hard, listening, gauging that at least two people had come in and were walking toward him. He heard the door being closed again then the bag was being pulled off his head.
He blinked in the sudden light, trying to focus, taking a deep breath of fresh air, sweet and clean after the mustiness of the bag. Still blinking, he squinted up at the figure that stepped into his view.
Startlingly blue eyes looked back at him.
His breath caught in his throat, dread washing through him, decade old memories snapping back into disturbing clarity, as if their last encounter had happened only yesterday…

"Look, Mommie!" the boy cried, waving a large, dripping lollipop and pointing through the railing at a coal barge floating sedately past the Point. Green glop fell from the disgusting orb, plopping onto Steve's wrist, seeping under his watch band. He closed the eye.
This is YOUR fault, Monica, he groused silently. One simple faint at a wedding
and she left him. Completely without reason! Now here he was in... Pittsburgh.
And it was all her fault.
He'd tried. God, HOW he'd tried. She wouldn't talk to him. He dated other women.
Somehow he'd lost his taste for photographing fruit. He couldn't look at a grape
and not think of her. Now he was in Pittsburgh. And it was her fault.

spilled on the Plains of Sheba (yes...it IS the General's!!!), Alex driving a bomb-laden bus off to
the Outback for a birthday party and a fire on a sheep station, love betrayed, ewe carts, a
horse race in Arabia with buttermilk trails and attack leopards on the loose, Terry saving
Nash from going over Niagara Falls, Sid's attempt to foil the filming of Cinderella Man,
seagull plots, broken hearts in moonlit parks, life in the bowels of a computer, a visit to The
Village/Signs/Twister/Legends of the Fall and more all together with all Russ' characters
(plus Juba), Sid as Clark Kent, plot devices, potty training, campfires, large vats of melted
chocolate, Sponge Bob, giant bats, a train wreck in deep snow, tiger cages, triage in the
Night Owl, eagle plunging, ocean crossing, Russ' Mum's muffins, the attempt to film
'Eucalyptus' and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing Sid does to the General,
death and even, alas, a bit of dismemberment, tracking down the wandering, anguished
Bud, rolling off Ayres Rock, blindness and snakes both at the same time, living at Russell's
on the Wharf in Sydney, bridge climbing, time travel, birthing in strange places, arrests in
the Opera House, kidnapping, pigeons, and evil Prime Ministers...and that's not the half of it.
Maybe 2/5. But definitely not a full half.
