THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS
Fort William Henry is on the hill beyond the island. The English fort was built in 1755 at the southern end of Lake George in upstate NY.
It was basically square with corner bastions and was intended to repel Indian attacks, but French General Montcalm and his troops plus
around 2000 Indians of mixed tribes were attacking it with artillery, which it was not meant to withstand...and didn't.
General Monro, Cora and Alice's father, had only left northern Ireland a year ago. He was a strictly by-the-book, unimaginative sort
of soldier, which really comes across accurately in the film.
I've always felt for this English courier, trying to run through enemy lines to get a message to Fort Edward, and how Hawkeye and
Uncas are supporting him by very accurate long-distance shots. And he does get through. It's the return courier who doesn't.
