In the film this scene opens with Maximus seated at a small table looking down at something, but we don't see what it is.
In the special features, though, we see he is looking at an arrangement of walnut shell halves and that he's pushing them
into place with the broken arrow tip that he picked up in the arena as Commodus was walking out.
Then he gets up and follows the guard...
...and here is where something changes that has always interested me. The picture on the left is from the extended version. The picture
that's larger beside it, the same frame, is from the original version, and then I've put a close up of his hand. In the original version, when he
gets up from the table, he takes his arrow point with him. I noticed that right off the first time I watched the original version. However
somebody else must've also noticed it, heh heh, and they decided, no, no, no, that won't work, so they've taken it out of his hand for
subsequent versions. In all versions, though, it's gone before they put the manacles on.
